Those of you who follow the Axanar action will have heard that they are near completion, you may or may not have heard that while this positive news was being posted, arbitration was happening and Alec Peters and Axanar Productions if a judge signs off on the findings, will have to pay $292,523.74 to Paramount Pictures Corporation and CBS Studios Inc., download the document in the link and you can see the arbitration findings for yourself.

Basically, the settlement that was hammered out between the parties a couple of years ago was found to have been violated seven times and now it is all but certain that Alec and Axanar Productions will pay a hefty price for it if it gets signed off on.

It is a privilege to make a fan film, Paramount Pictures Corporation and CBS Studios Inc. let people make Star Trek fan films based on their property and while some people think that some of the terms are draconian, they are way better than having nothing and those guidelines have let the hobby thrive without people having to compete against fan films that are armed to the teeth with professionals in front of and behind the cameras.

The people who are making Axanar were given more allowances than other fan film makers for example they got to keep their Prelude pros so they could have made the fan film and not encounter a single problem, but they wanted to be better than the rest and, in that pursuit, they repeatedly broke the settlement that they had agreed to and Paramount Pictures Corporation and CBS Studios Inc. decided one day that that’s enough and rightfully taken action.

Do not expect the calvary to ride to Axanar’s rescue if the tins are rattled to pay off the $292,523.74, the fan film scene has changed so much over the last decade and Star Trek on TV has changed so much too with Discovery, Picard, Strange New Worlds, Lower Decks and Prodigy all gracing our screens between settlement and arbitration.

Back when Axanar was hot, there was no fresh Star Trek on TV and Star Trek Beyond was released in 2016, that’s how much change has happened.

This is not an act of a corporation deciding to pick on a guy for kicks, they had a deal, that deal was breached and now Paramount Pictures Corporation and CBS Studios Inc. have come to collect.

Until next time, be good to each other.
