Two weeks to go until the 2023 Trekzone Fan Film Awards is on the internet for the people to enjoy.
Everything is quiet at the moment; I don’t know whether to be pleased about that or feel a little uneasy about it after the craziness of the last few weeks.
Waiting for the last few weeks to go by is like an eternity, I liked it when I had something to work on every day for thirteen months but now that almost everything is done, time is starting to really stretch itself out.
It feels like the last days of a school year, for example here in Australia the Year 12’s finish up first then the other grades finish up on by one and then eventually the juniors get to enjoy the Term 4 holidays and when you’re a junior time seems to slow down as there is not much happening, areas of the school are empty and people are just going through the motions to get to holidays.
So, let’s look towards 2024 because there’s already plenty in play for that year.
Farragut Forward will be a serious contender for fan film awards in 2024, it looks like they’ve thrown everything they’ve got into this production, it is basically a fan film blockbuster.
Axanar may also be a contender for awards in 2024, it seems that 2024 is the year the saga will come to a conclusion but whether it will be in time for any of the fan film awards is the question.
There’s no doubt that Chris Lea’s work will get more attention by the time the 2024 awards season comes around, those short fan films are beautiful work and also very unique.
More fan films by Wavelength would be interesting, if their VFX is improved upon, they may find themselves as one of the leaders of the pack as Wavelength’s fan films have that certain charm and uniqueness about them.
Potemkin Pictures will be cranking out quality fan films, so they’ll definitely be there in 2024.
No doubt there will be plenty more happening over the course of the next year, it will be interesting to look at them all.
The 2024 Fan Film Awards season will be an interesting one and we’ll see how things go.
Until next time, be good to each other.

I think it would be very good for the fan film hobby if Axanar Productions could publish their 2 shorts in 2024. I gather that other fan film creators are cheering for Axanar to succeed. Lamentably, history doesn’t offer encouragement as their target dates tend to retreat into the future in 6 to 9 month increments. Are they still going to go to the West coast and film? I should add that I couldn’t make a fan film short in a decade myself; but Axanar Productions of course has had access to a large funding stream and talent over these years that we’ve watched this saga (since 2014?).

I think people would be relieved when Axanar is made because it is like Duke Nukem Forever or the GNR album Chinese Democracy.
I try to tune out of Axanar personally, the brains working on it do not meet my standards of character but the legal action is so enthralling.
Are other creators cheering for Axanar? Well fan film bosses are pretty much demanding that everybody sing Kumbaya and have no negativity (that’s a load of bollocks) but there some who would say no way to cheering for Axanar.
I think that some people do business with certain individuals because going against them could really hurt their ability to get top talent and promotion.
You can make a fan film, you’ve got the brains and the money to do it and you could do it within a year, there’s so many ways to do one these days, let your creativity flow.
Have you noticed that everybody works on everybody else’s production? Josh Irwin hops from Avalon to Axanar to Neutral Zone, Victoria Avalon has worked on quite a few from Potemkin to Farragut Forward and Samuel Cockings provides VFX or supervises most productions VFX, in a way the professional era is creeping back in just with less money (or maybe the money is just out of mind, out of sight).
Bottom line, Axanar must be good with all the boasts and resources over the years, they’ve had a good ride especially with fans paying a chunk of Ares Studios to do stuff all year after year but we shall see, I still think it will be made barring a massive court loss.

I indeed have noticed the cross pollination among several current fan flim creators. The surprise for myself is that I haven’t heard mention of Tobias Richter in this hobby for some time. Farragutt certainy has some money ($34K or thereabouts). Mr Cocking’s GFM so far has fallen short of GBP 4K. He had previously planned anotherr IGG for July. As far as I know, Avalon is funded for their last several films in the Excalibur series.

A couple of years ago there was an Axanar livestream, Alexander Richardson mentioned to Alec something to do with Tobias and Axanar and it taken Alec by surprise before it was shut down quicker than turning off a light,
Assuming that Axanar would go after the best in Star Trek Fan Film VFX, there really is only one option outside of Tobias isn’t there?
Farragut is armed to the teeth with money, way more money than all the other big hitters and it looks like they spent it wisely, it is amazing that every fan production runs smoothly except for Axanar, all the others get their ducks in a row, but Axanar runs into snag after snag more than the law of averages.
Are fan films really a hobby? for some people it certainly is but for others, it seems to be way more than a hobby, it seems to be a business and one day somebody will do something incredibly stupid and get Paramount Global’s attention again.
