The end of another year is upon us but before we say goodbye to 2025, Trekzone and MTM are proud to present to you ‘Trekzone and MTM’s Best of 2025 List’.

While the name is the opposite in the artwork, MTM always defers to Trekzone in events like the Best of 2025 List and the Trekzone Fan Film Awards.

A fan film doesn’t have to be all nice and shiny to get our attention, what gets our attention is ingenuity, something that is not expected, it could be change up of what traditional antagonists are doing or the introduction of an antagonist that you’d never guess would happen in a Star Trek Fan Film.

A performance can be a short one or a long one, but you have to drawn in by their acting, if it is a scene of terror, are they truly terrified? are actors playing a stressed bridge crew in the middle of a battle?

For Best Hero Ship, we love fan films that take a chance on ships, there are a nice array of hero ships, and we are attracted to those that use a design that is not common in fan films.

It is not easy making picks, but we feel really good about these choices, and we hope that you the reader will enjoy them regardless of agreeing or disagreeing over choices.

Best Actress – Emily Krusche-Bruck as Samantha Giler in The Hive

Emily really makes this fan film happen, when scenes call for expressions of terror or panic, she delivers them especially in the final minutes of the fan film, a great performance that has to be seen.

Best Actor – Dennis StrauB as Captain Jason McClane in Erstkontakt

Every fan film needs a good captain, and Dennis provides a good captain with his performance as Captain Jason McClane in Erstkontakt, fans have come to expect a leader who is confident, quick thinking and in the thick of the action, these boxes and more are ticked.

Best Story – The Hive written by Jeff Nord

Jeff Nord has written good stories for his fan films, and The Hive is no exception, there’s risk in short fan films and that is a risk of not being a satisfactory viewing experience, but The Hive had a story that was satisfying, and its ending makes you think.

Best Visual Effects – Erstkontakt

After having a having a good look through every considered option, Erstkontakt is best one out there when it comes to visual effects, there are shuttle scenes, planetary scenes, weather events, space combat scenes, it is all one nice package.

Best Costumes – Erstkontakt

Erstkontakt has a nice range of uniforms to look at including the classic look including the jackets, this may be a controversial choice considering Farragut 2024 and its well-known uniforms, but we are happy with this selection.

Best Trailer – The Final Mission – Trailer 2

This upcoming fan film has had our attention for over a year now, we still don’t know much about it and that’s the intriguing part, it is going to make us watch the fan film to understand what we had seen in the trailers.

Best Hero Ship – USS Fievel NAR-1986

This ship is certainly the change of pace that we have been looking for, it is small, nimble and gives its attacker a really hard time.

Best Makeup – Into the Wild

‘Into the Wild’ had Captain T’Lema, Sciece Officer T’Sov and Annok with Annok done really well and sold the whole alien aspect in the fan film, it looked like a lot of work was put in to make Annok look right and it did look really good.

Best Antagonists – Vampires in Defiant Chapter 9

This one was very surprising, the chances of somebody choosing Vampires as antagonists is very slim but Defiant made the choice and it worked really well, it is going to be interesting to see what happens in future chapters.

Best Director – Chelsey L. Boston and Randall Landers for Protector’s Toll

Chelsey and Randall done a great job in directing this fan film, a fan film that highlights the agonies of making a decision that can impact the life of somebody important in your life and the lives of everybody who is around them.

Best Fan Film – Erstkontakt

Erstkontakt has great visuals, it has good sound, it has a great soundtrack to accompany the film, it has a great story and one that is not straightforward, it ticks all of our boxes, and we couldn’t be happier making it our choice for 2025.

Best Short Fan Film – The Hive

Jeff Nord’s fan films comfortably fit the short film category, and he makes every second count. ‘The Hive’ is no exception to this reputation, this one leaves us wanting more, it is open ended as there is a choice coming up.

Best Animated Fan Film – Defiant Chapter 9

This chapter of a fan film was quite a surprise; the chapter numbering also takes us back to the days when theatres would screen serials and each week would have a new chapter to see.
