The world is three episodes into Starfleet Academy, two for me because at home because we like to watch them once a week despite the temptation of watching the first two episodes in one sitting.
So far, so good, the biggest issue that we have is the sound quality, sometimes it is hard to understand what on earth some of them are saying, it is like they are talking distantly or their voices are buried in the sound mix.
It is nice that there is a mix of species as the main characters, it is unique there is Starfleet Academy, an academy that can take students to places away from Earth, I had always wondered about that, always wondered if the academy had starships waiting to take students to planets for whatever they are trying to learn about or onboard learning of how to run a ship.
Loved the use of ‘San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Flowers in Your Hair)’, some say the academy is not in San Francisco, but what has to be remembered is that cities can absorb nearby suburbs and with hundreds of years gone by, SF may have grown quite big.
It is always amusing seeing Facebook posts offering differing opinions, it is from one extreme to the other, that’s the internet for you, some offer good support of the show or offer good critique and some just go for the trusty old playbook using words like ‘Drek’ and ‘not real Star Trek’ and ‘Gene would be rolling in his grave’ (if he was alive he’d be rolling in his cash) and there is the occasional wish that Paramount would work with Axanar, if that wish happened, we would have had episodes coming in 2038, 2050, 2062, 2074, 2086, 2098, 2110 and 2122 as Axanar’s Episode IV has been in the pipeline for twelve years.
There is so much fear that Starfleet Academy will become something like Dawson’s Creek or 90210, being somebody who grew up during that time, I am surprised a number of people in their 30’s and 40’s have not thrown Degrassi High into the mix, now that was classic TV when it came to High School activities.
Starfleet Academy would really be College, so you’d consider Animal House or something like that, seeing the promo for the third episode seems to be more to that standard.
Yes, there will be High School/College angst, plenty of jealousy as hearts go wandering, there will be accidents like the mucus, the cadets will learn lessons and eventually become the future of Starfleet (and the franchise), and you never know, there might be spin offs to last long into the future.
Relationships are going to be a real interest point, man/woman, man/man, woman/woman and then you got all the pronouns, photonics and different species, some love a little romance sprinkled into a show and others don’t want relationships in stories and prefer shows to just stick to the setting which in our case is Starfleet Academy.
We live in a world that is so high strung that we need to relax a little without doing a John Madden like analysis of everything.
People rush off to judge a series off a snippet of a scene or a picture, gone are the days of curiosity, and patience, we’ve become accustomed to instant satisfaction from buying games to streaming.
Fans wanted Legacy but it didn’t come and it probably ticked a number of fans off as Picard’s last season was acclaimed but that’s Television, for every one that makes it, there’s 99 ideas that do not make it, but you never know, Legacy may come back around.
There’s still a long way to go until the end of Season 1, we’ll look back at Starfleet Academy when it is done.
Until next time, be good to each other.
All in all, I find Starfleet Academy quite watchable. It’s not my favorite Star Trek. It’s not my least favorite either. But the cast seems to be a good one. I’m very happy with Holly Hunter’s performance in particular. She seems a good fit. The cadets are generally quite well played, and the only character and concept I don’t care for is the War Academy and its Commandant. But hey, maybe it’ll work out soon.
BTW, I do agree about the volume, and SAM talks so fast. I have to watch SFA with the close captioning on.
You addressed the polarization of fandom, and I addressed the polarization of Human society in our latest Star Trek fan production. It’s a matter we should all be concerned with.
Thanks again for the post! Always enjoy reading them!
