We’ve got some Fan Film documentaries coming up in the future, one about a fan film that helped put fan films on thin ice and one that ended up cracking the ice and ending the big-time fan film industry as we knew it.

Renegades: The Making of Star Trek: Of Gods and Men is first up, as you can tell it tells the story of ‘Of Gods and Men’ and that film was self-proclaimed by its makers as ‘the first independent Star Trek feature film’.

‘Of Gods and Men’ certainly taken fan films to a whole new realm, it was packed full of Star Trek stars where it used to be just a bunch of friends having a good time in front of a camera.

Soon we had New Voyages and Continues wheeling out the professionals again and again and fan film after fan film on sets that were the proper television scale and design and things started going out of control.

As you can see, they are wasting no time selling ‘Of Gods and Men’ and the Documentary on disc, will the former result in a C&D? It is really interesting ground that they are walking on, do they have the legal right to sell ‘Of Gods and Men’?

Is there still a market for such a documentary considering how long it has been? It is hard to say, Star Trek fans do have a big appetite for material, and they may snap this one up or wait for a version that is free to view.

Then we have…..


‘The Battle for Axanar‘ has been announced, and it is going to tell the story of its sixteen-year journey.

It certainly was no dull journey, from its early success with Prelude to Axanar to the infamous lawsuit, Christian Gossett leaving, suing Robert Meyer Burnett and then dropping it, the Paul Jenkins era, COVID, the Paul Jenkins lawsuit, arbitration with CBS, the resulting loss in arbitration, the lawsuit win over Paul Jenkins and finally release, the modern-day Epic of Gilgamesh.

Like ‘Of Gods and Men’ the Axanar team saw themselves as making an Independent Star Trek Film which is different to a fan film, they didn’t like being called a fan film.

John Ottoman has said that he was offered to be a producer of the documentary, he thought ‘Consulting’ but he is not THE Producer and will have a word with Alec.

Did Axanar really shake Hollywood? Claiming to be an independent production and having no rights certainly was not the normal and some people like JJ Abrams were worried about the lawsuit making an impact on Star Trek, but the majority of fans had no idea what Axanar was or that there was a lawsuit going on so any impact would have been minimal had the case dragged on.

The July 15 post offered up a link to sign up for notifications and so it was duly clicked on.

Avast says it is a dangerous website and in the category of Phishing, that’s not a good sign.

Will the documentary be an honest account of the last sixteen years? Will we hear from Christian Gossett, Robert Meyer Burnett and Paul Jenkins? Will we find out why Axanar signed a settlement with CBS when they felt they could win especially with a free legal team? will we find out why they broke the settlement at every opportunity? Will we find out why the lawsuit against Paul Jenkins was dropped leaving only Paul’s countersuing?

Now that Episode IV is coming and Episode V is coming later, assuming that there is no problem with CBS, we will find out if the documentary that ex-Axanar director Paul Jenkins was working on will actually be complete or it was vapourware, a lot of money was thrown into the effort and when Axanar is complete, the full story can be told, or can it? It would also be missing major players in the Axanar saga for example Alec Peters so you may end up with two skewed documentaries.

Who knows what is going to happen in the next few months, hopefully nothing and it just sails through to the completion.
