What satisfies a Star Trek fan?

The last decade has seen fans tearing each other apart over what makes the right kind of series or movie.

It is interesting that when reading through The Gathering Storm comments as it is considered by some to be the best Star Trek in the last twenty years, it is a fan film that uses elements of the Abrams era, an era that some fans don’t like and it has a ‘Gary or Marty Stu’ when people didn’t like the Michael Burnham character in Discovery because she was deemed a ‘Mary Sue’.

It is interesting how people want what they don’t want, I guess that it depends on who the person is that is selling it.

Lately we’ve seen people unhappy with gays and lesbians, pronouns, inclusiveness and all the modern-day trendy stuff in Discovery and Starfleet Academy thinking it is being shoved down our throats and want a return to all straight (with just gay/lesbian implying), no pronouns, not all-inclusive Star Trek.

Now we’ve got Straight New Worlds episodes that have puzzled fans from a Spring Break like episode to one that is in black and white to one with puppets and people consider those a waste of time as shows now have 50% or more less episodes and those sorts of episodes were considered filler back in the 1966-2005 era.

I don’t envy writers and showrunners one bit; they got to try and find new fans but also satisfy decade long fans and some of them believe that they know exactly how Star Trek should be, it is really the same for Star Wars and any other franchise.

Sometimes it can be a miserable experience watching Star Trek, you watch it being battered from pillar to post online and then you see the next episode being available and wonder if there is any point in watching it, the excitement gets sucked out of it.

We saw Supergirl get beaten to a pulp recently and apparently it is not a bad movie, it is no Citizen Kane, but public opinion surrounded it and started kicking it around and likely scared people off from watching it.

We’ve seemed to have become the miserable generations; people look at past Australian Football League games and say, ‘When Men Were Men!’ and pretty much the same for NASCAR and add in ‘When Stock Cars were Stock Cars’ and music was better and all the rest.

Apparently, the Kurtzman era is over and good luck to the next person as they got to find that find new fans and keep the old fans balance and it is a tightrope to walk on.
